What is a Service Agent/Registered Agent?

A Service Agent (also called a Registered Agent) is an individual or third-party company designated to act as your official point of contact within a state. Their primary role is to:

  • Receive legal and government documents on your behalf
  • Accept service of process (e.g., lawsuits, notices)
  • Ensure important compliance communications are properly delivered

Many states require businesses—especially those operating out of state—to appoint a registered agent as part of the licensing process.

Do I need one?

In many cases, yes. Requirements vary by state, so it’s important to check the specific regulations where you are applying for licenses.

Can LibDib act as my Service Agent?

No. LibDib cannot legally act as your Service or Registered Agent.
This role must be filled by an independent third party with a physical presence in the state who is authorized to receive legal documents on your behalf.

How do I get a Service Agent?

There are many companies that specialize in registered agent services. You can find more information through your state’s regulatory website or by working with a licensed third-party provider.
